The tiny computer with the big ideas
Not many people outside of the world of computing have heard of the Raspberry Pi but you may well do soon. The Raspberry Pi is a low-cost Linux computer the size of a pack of playing cards that should be available later this month. Its not the size that makes this 700Mhz computer truly remarkable, its the price - just $35!
The idea for this remarkable little computer came from Eben Upton, a lecturer at Cambridge University who was concerned that the skills of his A Level Computer Science students was dropping. Of course, there are many reasons for this (ICT at schools, rise of the games console and to some extent the take over of the Internet) but Eben and his team hoped that by producing an amazingly cheap computer, kids can be encouraged to play, investigate and learn programming.
Getting kids involved in programming is something we fully support here at Artsgraphica so we can't wait to get our hands on this little computer to see what it can do. Hopefully 10 year olds across the World will share our enthusiasm for this remarkable project and get inspired to make a career in programming.
