Setting up an IMAP email account in Outlook

This article will walk you through setting up Outlook 2003 with IMAP.

IMAP stands for Internet Message Access Protocol and works slightly differently than the standard POP email accounts. IMAP allows messages to be stored on a server so that they may be accessed from multiple machines. This makes IMAP ideal for accessing your email on the move or through a webmail account.

IMAP works best when you have a constant connection to the Internet such as a broadband connection. If you are using a dial up connection then it might be better to use the standard POP Email.

First, you’ll want to open up Outlook 2003, then select Tools | Email Accounts, like so:

We’re setting up a new account, so choose “Add a new e-mail account”:

On the Server Type page, make sure to choose “IMAP” as the server type:

On Internet Email settings, enter in the following information (replacing “example.com” with your domain name):

Now we need to setup outgoing email. To do this, click on the “More Settings” button, where you’ll be presented with the following screen:

Click on the “Outgoing Server” tab, and check the box that says “My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication)”. Use the default radio button box of “Use same settings as my incoming mail server”:

Click Finish. You email account is now setup so please try sending an email to yourself to check that the settings are correct. If you encounter a problem, then please check that you have completed all the steps in the instructions above and if you continue to have problems then please give Artsgraphica a call on 01472 500305.
